John attended West Virginia University from 1987-88 on a diving scholarship. He transferred to the University of Maryland 1988 and competed there until 1992. In 1994 while competing at the U.S. Diving Indoor Senior National Championships he narrowly misses qualifying for the National Championships.
He eventually began completing on trampoline. In 1997 he went to his first National Championships in Trampoline, winning two gold medals that year, one in Synchronized trampoline and one on Double mini-trampoline. Soon after that he began to perform professionally in diving and trampoline for Water Show Productions. As a performer he has travel all over the Untied States and has also performed in Japan and England.
As a coach he started the Sky High trampoline program in his home of Frederick Maryland. The team competes in 4 different events, trampoline, double-mini trampoline, power tumbling, and synchronized trampoline, winning more than 30 State Championship titles and several Medals at the U. S. Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships. Two members of his team have won National titles in 1997 & 1999.As a diving coach he trained and worked with U.S. Olympic Diving Team Head Coach Ron O’Brien. . In 1993 an athlete he coached qualified to compete at the US Diving Senior National Championships. Her name is Nicole Marasco, and she competed on women's 1 meter. In 1994 John moved to Orlando Florida to train with three-time Chinese Olympian and bronze medallist, Kongzheng Li. At the end of 1994 he accepted a 1-year interim position as diving coach at the University of Maryland. He is also certified to judge diving at all levels and all events, and has judged national as well as international events.
In 1998 John invented a seat that attaches to crutches called the J-Sling, which provides a means of resting for people on crutches. He has a patent pending and has started his own business called “J-Sling Company.” Revenues from this business will someday go towards the construction of a training facility for divers, trampoline performers, tumblers, gymnasts, and extreme games participants. In 1999 John was asked to be a member of the U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling Education Committee. He has appeared on Good Morning America to discuss trampoline safety. John began working with The Pro-Action Team in 1999, and continues to coach diving and trampoline. He also provides clinics for both sports.
